Ant Control San Antonio
Ants are one of the most successful groups of insects. Ants generally live in colonies located in the ground and will enter your home when searching for shelter and/or food. Heavy rains can send them into your home as their ground colonies become uninhabitable or in some instances, ants may find a plentiful food source within your home. These social insects eat almost any kind of foods, but they love sweets and protein-containing substances within your home. About 700 species of ants occur in the United States while only about 25 species commonly infest homes, mostly during the warmer months. Ants can range in color from red to black and will contaminate food. Most ants never bother you, but fire ants are tenacious little predators that have a painful sting and when attacking as a group or when someone is allergic to their sting can be deadly. Carpenter Ants are wood destroying ants with a long life span and will establish a nest in the cavity of wood. A mature colony of carpenter ants will contain 2,000 or more workers with one single fertile queen. In San Antonio we spend more time with the eradication of Fire ants and Carpenter Ants than almost any other insect.
Fire Ant
Red imported fire ants nest in soil and build mound nests. Typically fire ants in San Antonio are ground nesting but will also nest in wood or masonry of buildings. They can invade potted plants, but typically nest outside; will nest in bath traps where soil is present. The Fire Ant is destructive and known to remove insulation from phone and electrical wires and damage clothing and vegetation. Their bites are painful and can cause serve allergic reactions. The sting of a red imported fire ant is painful and often results in a raised welt that becomes a white pustule. Often, a person stung by a red imported fire ant receives multiple painful stings from more than one of the ants. Persons allergic to insect stings will react more severely. Red imported fire ants and their telltale mound nests should be actively avoided. To prevent entry into a structure, seal all internal and external cracks and crevices.
Black Ant
Black Ants are usually seen around homes following defined trails between the nest and food and water sources. Once inside, trails beneath the carpet, along edges and towards food sources. Most infestations inside are the result of workers searching for food. On occasion, a colony or part of a colony may establish itself inside a wall, behind brick veneer or beneath the carpet by a doorway.
Pharaoh Ant
Very small and difficult to control; nest in hard to reach places near water and food source; trail along phone and electrical cords. Once inside, nest in wall voids, behind baseboards and in furniture. Wide preference in foods–carbs for energy and proteins for larva and egg development.
